Mutual Intercultural Relations among University Students in Canada
Gui, Yongxia; Safdar, Saba; Berry, John
Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad, v27 p17-32 Apr 2016
The current study examies the views of both international and domestic students in Canada using the conceptual and empirical framework from the MIRIPS (Mutual Intercultural Relations in Plural Societies) project (http://www.victoria.ac.nz/cacr/research/mirips). Two hypotheses were examined. First is the "multiculturalism hypothesis" which has shown that the greater cultural security persons felt, the more they held positive attitudes towards other ethnic groups and immigrants and the more they accepted multiculturalism (Berry et al., 1977; Berry & Kalin, 1995; Esses, Hodson, & Dovidio, 2003). Second is the integration hypothesis. This hypothesis is based on previous research that has shown that there is a consistent pattern of relationships between a preference for the integration/multicultural strategy and individuals' better adaptation.
