Young, Gifted, and Handicapped: Mainstreaming High Potential Handicapped Students into the Executive High School Internships Program.
Hirsch, Sharlene P.
The document describes the Executive High School Internships program which mainstreamed a pilot group of 14 high potential students with orthopedic, hearing, and sight impairments into a project which enabled them to spend a full term, on leave from classes, in nonpaid placements with public and private sector managers and executives, learning how organizations function and how decisions are made. Sections address the following program components: objectives (including increasing self awareness and self esteem); accomplishments (including general acceptance of the handicapped group by peers); intern selection (qualifications, recruitment, finalists, and results); placements (sponsor selection and placement level); special services (transportation and access, counseling, and other needs); case studies (descriptions of student placements in the fields of law, radio, personnel, commercial art, health, fiscal operations, human services, and banking services); and internal organization. A final section reports evaluation of the project (including the finding that handicapped interns were able to complete the program successfully with nonhandicapped peers in independent world of work situations) and offers recommendations. Appendixes include an outline of project guidelines, a sample internship academic credit form, an official program description, an internship summary, and a list of colleges and universities accepting executive interns.
