Art Activities for the ESL Classroom.
Stocking, Sally Elizabeth
Seventeen art activities are suggested for use in the intermediate-level class of English as a second language to review specific grammar points, provide conversation practice, and improve writing skills. In these art activities, students create their own visual aids and use them for a variety of language activities, such as: creating a family tree, giving directions to a hidden treasure, drawing pictures corresponding to prepositions, printing news headlines of 2040 A.D., creating an advertisement, creating a machine, creating a monster, making a poster for a cause, completing and describing a free-form picture made with string and ink, making a gameboard, making a self-portrait collage, writing an obituary, constructing a book cover, making a wish-picture, imagining and discussing a terrible hazard, creating a story from individual student drawings, and role-playing authority situations with finger puppets. In the description of each activity, the following information is provided: language skills reviewed; time required; number and grouping of students; general idea involved; presentation method; the time materials, preparation, and directions for the art activity portion; the time, preparation, directions, and follow-up for the language activity portion; further related activities; and illustrations of possible results. All activities are intended to use no more than half a 60-minute class period. (MSE)
