Project REACH: Development of Competency Based Research Utilization Modules to Improve Education Services through Camping for the Physically Handicapped. Final Report.
Vinton, Dennis A.; Farley, Elizabeth M.
The final report describes a 3 year project to develop research utilization modules to improve educational services through camping for the physically handicapped. An introductory chapter lists four major project goals--to research the state of the art of camping for the physically handicapped; to systematically identify the competencies needed and tasks performed by personnel serving the physically handicapped in residential camps; to develop competency based modular program packages for training personnel to work in camps serving the physically handicapped; and to evaluate and disseminate the competency based program packages. Subsequent chapters address project organization, approach, and management; procedures and methodology; results; and recommendations. Appendixes, which make up the bulk of the document, include the following: an annotated bibliography on camping and environmental education for handicapped children and youth; a sample copy of the camp program survey; critical incident survey instrument; information on task analysis procedures and results; a report on initial prototype tryout of camp counselor training materials; a report on second prototype tryout information; field testing procedures; outside evaluators' discussion questionnaire; curriculum development task force review forms; evaluation report of American Camping Association Managerial Training Materials; information bulletins; plan for materials, design, production, and dissemination; report of market analysis of REACH materials; a paper on the role of the special educator in residential camps serving the physically handicapped; and an agenda of the planning conference on camping and environmental education for the handicapped.
