Building an Online Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Community of Practice Using Existing Institutional Resources
Cirillo, Jane Marie; Shay, Cammy
Journal of Faculty Development, v21 n2 p101-108 May 2007
Communities of practice that are centered on the scholarship of teaching and learning are a means for faculty to engage in professional development activities such as research, knowledge sharing, continuing education, and forming collaborative partnerships. As a result of budget constraints experienced by many colleges and universities, the financial capital needed to invest in the development of communities of practice may be limited. Additionally, the various responsibilities required by higher education faculty pose challenges to ongoing, face-to-face interaction. Considering these constraints, the following article addresses the value of online communities of practice and provides a model for launching a professional community utilizing existing institutional resources.
