Maximizing Federal Food and Nutrition Funds for Out-of-School Time and Community School Initiatives. Strategy Brief, Volume 1, Number 3. Tools for Out-of-School Time and Community School Initiatives.
Langford, Barbara Hanson
Noting the importance of good nutrition to out-of-school time programs serving children, this strategy brief provides an overview of the major sources of federal food and nutrition funds that can support out-of-school time and community school programs. The brief then highlights five strategies that community leaders and program developers can employ to maximize the use of federal food and nutrition funds in their communities. The strategy section describes the relevant funding sources for each strategy, including specific requirements for the use of program funds, and highlights examples of each strategy in practice. This section also discusses considerations for the use of each strategy. The five strategies address snacks, meals, summer nutrition, technical assistance and outreach, and combining applications.
