Role of Child Nutrition Programs in Health Education.
Martin, M. Josephine
The role of health educators in integrating child nutrition programs into school health education is discussed and issues attending such programs are considered. The importance of breakfast and lunch programs in the school is stressed with particular emphasis on using these programs to instruct children in sound nutritional practices. It is pointed out that while the federal government underwrites these programs to some extent, funding is insufficient and the school community and parents have a responsibility to support them. The basic focus of nutrition programs must be to teach children the relationship between food and good health. Discussion is presented on fitting nutrition education into the school curriculum, the components of a model nutrition program, the role of child nutrition programs in overall school health programs, and factors that influence a child's food habits.
