Beyond Blame: Challenging Violence in the Media. Teacher's Guide C: Middle School Classes and Groups (Grades 6 through 8).
English, Jill; Levin, P. Rachel
This teacher's guide provides an approach for teachers of grades 6-8 to teach media literacy and promote an informed public conversation about the impact of violent imagery in the culture today. Five key goals govern the program: (1) to reduce exposure to media violence; (2) to change the impact of violent images that are seen; (3) to locate and explore alternatives to media that focus on violence to solve conflict; (4) to uncover and challenge the cultural, economic, and political supports for media violence; and (5) to introduce skills of media advocacy and organizing for change. The lessons in this guide include: (1) "What Are You Watching?" (2) "Why Is Everyone Watching?" (3) "Violence Doesn't Solve Problems, It Causes Them" (4) "Heroes and Heroines: Who's Real? Who's Fake?" (5) "How Much Violence Do You Watch?" (6) "What's the Big Deal? Four Effects of Viewing Media Violence" (7) "Who's Responsible?"; and (8) "Sharing What You Have Learned." Twenty reproducible worksheets accompany the lessons. (EH)
