An Immunization Education Program for Childcare Providers
Hayney, Mary S.; Bartell, Julie C.
Journal of School Health, v75 n4 p147 Apr 2005
The childhood immunization schedule includes at least 17 scheduled immunizations prior to the age of 24 months. Immunization laws require childcare centers to maintain immunization records and enforce immunization standards for children who attend these centers. Childcare providers generally receive little formal education about infectious diseases, but a sense about the importance of immunization among childcare providers is assumed. Influenza has been identified as an important vaccine-preventable disease among young children. This common respiratory virus causes many hospitalizations in this age group. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommend that children aged 6 to 23 months receive influenza vaccine. In addition, out-of-home caregivers for all children younger than 2 years should also receive an annual influenza vaccine. This survey measured the validity of the assumption that childcare providers viewed immunization as an important part of young children's health and the value of an education seminar to increase the knowledge of childcare providers about immunization.
