Puerto Rican History and Culture: A Study Guide and Curriculum Outline.
Aran, Kenneth; And Others
The document consists of teacher-developed resource units on Puerto Rican history and culture for junior and senior high school students. The objective is to help students understand and appreciate cultural diversity which can serve as a source of unity and pride rather than divisiveness and enmity. Teaching techniques include class discussion, interviews, debate, and research. The following units are outlined: 1) What do we mean by Puerto Rican identity? 2) How has Puerto Rican migration differed from other forms of immigration to the United States? 3) How have Puerto Ricans adjusted to life in New York City? 4) How did four centuries of Spanish rule determine the life style of Puerto Rico? 5) How has the United States' presence affected life in Puerto Rico? 6) How has the traditional Puerto Rican family been influenced by mainland American cultural values? 7) How have the Puerto Rican people been affected by geographic and economic forces? 8) How did the Puerto Rican culture evolve? 9) How has organized religion affected Puerto Rican life? A brief introduction, aims, content outline, and approaches and activities are provided for each unit. An annotated bibliography is also included. (RM)
