Alpine Skiing in the Classroom
Mendez-Gimenez, Antonio; Fernandez-Rio, Javier
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v25 n3 p19-21 Jan-Feb 2012
Many students settle indoors in the winter. However, this does not mean that winter should be a period of time with no physical activity. Several snow activities could be practiced during those months, such as ice-skating, ice-hockey, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, or snowboarding. In order to counteract the tendency for students to be inactive, some school districts have tried to integrate snow sports into their physical education programs. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are two of those winter activities that have been effectively incorporated into several schools' curriculum. Through strategies such as game play and dance, physical educators have been able to successfully teach specific skills and concepts to their students. Furthermore, those winter sports have also been integrated into other classroom subjects such as geography, science, or social studies for a complete understanding of their recreational activities. This article provides a framework to bring one of the most popular winter sports (alpine skiing) into the gym. (Contains 4 pictures.)
