Writing and Mathematics: An Exponential Combination
Rothstein, Andrew; Rothstein, Evelyn
Principal Leadership, v7 n5 p21-25 Jan 2007
The academic silos that house mathematics, science, and language skills must be broken down to better replicate how those disciplines mix in the real world. This article discusses the benefits of linking writing with mathematics, the challenges of integrating mathematics and writing, and the strategies for mathematics writing. Combining mathematics with writing promotes students' ability to analyze, compare facts, and synthesize information. Integrating writing and mathematics also increases student engagement while building student knowledge. When the writing strategies are specifically aligned to word problems, mastering algorithms, or applying mathematical concepts, teachers naturally start integrating curriculum, with the added benefit of making mathematical literacy an enjoyable learning experience.
