Higher education and the military have been linked throughout U.S. history. Following World War II, the President's Commission on Higher Education released "Higher Education for American Democracy," popularly known as the Truman Commission Report of 1946. It called for, among other things, the establishment of a network of public community colleges that would charge little or no tuition, serve as cultural centers, be comprehensive in their program offerings with emphasis on civic responsibilities, and serve the area in which they were located. The ability of community colleges to respond to constituent needs makes them ideal spaces to enroll student veterans. An array of baccalaureate, prebaccalaureate, and vocational course options are available at almost all community colleges. This article will identify ways in which community colleges are well positioned to support student veterans, discuss the need for heightened awareness concerning student veterans' experiences, and make recommendations to assist staff, faculty, and administrators to better serve student veterans at their institutions.
