An Application of the Facet-Factorial Approach to Scale Construction in Development of a Rating Scale for High School Marching Band Performance

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an instrument through facet-factorial analysis to assess high school marching band performance. Forty-one items were chosen to define subscales for the Marching Band Performance Rating Scale - Music and 31 items for the Marching Band Performance Rating Scale - Visual. To examine the stability of the MBPRS-Music and Visual structures, and to obtain data for interjudge reliability and criterion-related validity, 60 judges rated nine different high school marching band performances. The results were as follows: a) factor analysis revealed the following underlying factors of high school marching band performance for MBPRS-Music: 1) Communication and Effectiveness, 2) Sound Quality, 3) Program Construction, and 4) Rhythm; b) factor analysis revealed the following underlying factors of high school marching band performance for MBPRS-Visual: 1) Construction and Performance, 2) Visual Execution, and 3) Quality; c) moderate to high interjudge reliability estimates were found for total and all subscale scores of MBPRS-Music; d) high interjudge estimates were found for total and all subscale scores of MBPRS-Visual, except for Factor 3, Quality, which had unacceptable to poor reliability estimates; e) high interjudge reliability estimates were found for the magnitude estimation scores for music and visual judging sets (each set, groups of 10 judges); f) moderate to low Coefficients of Concordance, W, were found for all three performance set groups for music and visual judging sets; g) strong, significant correlations were found among Communication and Effectiveness, Sound Quality, Rhythm, and total score for MBPRS-Music; however, nonsignificant correlations were found between magnitude estimation totals and MBPRS-Music; h) strong, significant correlations were found between Construction and Performance, Visual Execution, and total score for MBPRS-Visual, however, nonsignificant correlations were found between magnitude estimation totals and MBPRS-Visual; i) the MBPRS-Music did not demonstrate acceptable criterion-related validity; however, Factor 1, Communication and Effectiveness was the strongest factor predictor for total score; and j) the MBPRS-Visual did not demonstrate acceptable criterion-related validity; however, Construction and Performance was the strongest factor predictor for total score.
