'Tis the Season to Be Reading
Harvey, Carl A., II
Library Media Connection, v26 n3 p16-17 Nov-Dec 2007
As the end of the calendar year approaches, many begin to think about the holiday season. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year's all bring an opportunity to bring family and friends together. Libraries will be stocked with titles to help folks remember classic stories and introduce them to new tales as well. Educators can use holiday books to go beyond bringing back old memories. These books can also teach students about other cultures and traditions. The stories help students see that children around the world are not that different from themselves since they all celebrate holidays of some kind or another. Because holidays are a popular time for book purchases and holiday traditions are often part of the school curriculum, there is no shortage of holiday books published each year. All year long, not just during the winter holiday season, wonderful books are written to celebrate and inform about every major holiday. This article lists some of these books, fiction and nonfiction.
