"Who's to Blame?": An Activity to Stimulate Reflection about Anti-HIV Stigma in an Undergraduate Course on the HIV Epidemic
Beshers, Sarah C.
American Journal of Sexuality Education, v2 n1 p77-87 Mar 2007
A classroom-based activity was created to help undergraduate students in a course about the HIV epidemic explore and better understand the nature and scope of anti-HIV stigma. The activity asks students to assess the extent of their sympathy for several people living with HIV disease when given only a brief statement about how each person became infected with HIV. Small group and large group discussions subsequently elicit varied perspectives on the behaviors and circumstances which can result in HIV transmission. The activity facilitates critical reflection which leads at least some students to begin to question their judgmental attitudes towards many people living with HIV disease.
