TASK: Let's Have a Party!
Rees, James
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v111 n7 p23-25 Mar 2012
In this article, the author describes a creative way to demystify contemporary art for students. TASK is artist Oliver Herring's creation, where participants actively interpret instructions found on little pieces of paper--what he calls "tasks." An art classroom has all the key ingredients for a TASK event: (1) people; (2) materials; (3) space; (4) imagination; and (5) fun. It provides the perfect introduction to contemporary art and exploration, and to other members of the course. This is an ideal introductory activity because it breaks down preconceived notions, helps individuals connect as a community, embraces the essence of the creative act, and encourages imagination. TASK is a great way to help students reconnect with the energy, playfulness, and uninhibited discovery of a child. (Contains 2 online resources.)
