1969 MLA International Bibliography of Books and Articles on the Modern Languages and Literatures. Volume I: General, English, American, Medieval and Neo-Latin, and Celtic Literatures.
Meserole, Harrison T., Comp.
Volume 1 of the 4-volume, international bibliography contains some 9,000 entries referring to books and articles which focus on general, English, American, medieval and neo-Latin, and Celtic literatures. The master list of the nearly 1,500 periodicals from which entries are derived is furnished at the beginning of the volume with a table of abbreviations. A section on general literature and related topics includes subclassifications on: (1) aesthetics, (2) literary criticism and literary theory, (3) general and comparative literature, (4) themes and types, (5) folklore, (6) bibliographical, and (7) miscellaneous works. English literature is classified by century and subject, e.g., material on Australia, Canada, special topics, old and middle English, "Beowulf," Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Milton. Coverage by century of American literature begins with the 17th century and includes separate subject classifications on Hawthorne, Melville, Clemens, Whitman, Faulkner, and Hemingway. Medieval Latin and neo-Latin entries provide another classification. Celtic literatures include bibliography, Breton, Cornish, Gaulish, Irish Gaelic, Manx, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh categories. A computer-generated index of authors concludes the bibliography. (RL)
