To Hell with Privacy
Kochersberger, Bob
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n37 pB20 May 2009
The author shares how he helps a student who is a drug addict and reflects about the role of teachers on the campus. He believes that most teachers on the faculty are caring individuals, often parents themselves who want the best for their students. But the author also realizes that teachers are pressed for time, have a wide range of conflicting interests, and are sometimes misled. There is widespread concern over privacy matters and the threat of litigation, which have become increasingly prevalent on American campuses. The bureaucracy inclines faculty members to mind their own business. But when students need fast, serious help, the author contends that teachers should be sensitive, observant, and bold enough to act when someone is in trouble. Their goal should not only be teaching the material, but also keeping their sonar tuned to what may be happening beneath the surface.
