Adapting the Sport Education Model for Children with Disabilities
Presse, Cindy; Block, Martin E.; Horton, Mel; Harvey, William J.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v82 n3 p32-39 Mar 2011
The sport education model (SEM) has been widely used as a curriculum and instructional model to provide children with authentic and active sport experiences in physical education. In this model, students are assigned various roles to gain a deeper understanding of the sport or activity. This article provides a brief overview of the SEM and presents suggestions and examples of how the student roles in the SEM can be adapted to meet the needs of students with disabilities. "Low-impact" and "high-impact" modifications for children with disabilities are introduced to demonstrate the contribution of children with disabilities to a team's overall success.
