Adult Volunteers. A Handbook for Teacher-Librarians in the Vancouver School Board to Provide Assistance to Teacher-Librarians Who Are Establishing Adult Volunteer Programs, [and] to Suggest Ideas for Teacher-Librarians Who Wish to Enlarge or Enhance Their Volunteer Programs.
Vancouver School Board (British Columbia).
Guidelines are presented for establishing, enhancing, and evaluating adult volunteer programs in school library resource centers, especially those in Vancouver, Canada. It is noted that in 1982 over 200 adults volunteered their time to work on a regular basis with teacher-librarians in Vancouver. Sections include: (1) a rationale for establishing adult volunteer programs; (2) a list of common program objectives; (3) a general operational model for a volunteer program, adapted from the "General Handbook on Volunteers in Schools" by Ronald Cussons; (4) a discussion of sources of adult volunteers, recruitment techniques, and selection methods; (5) information on orientation and training, with a check list of sample tasks for volunteers; (6) a description of motivational techniques for keeping volunteers happy; (7) guidelines for program administration, communication with volunteers, and showing volunteers how much they are appreciated; (8) information on developing a handbook for volunteer use; (9) a discussion of program evaluation; and (10) a series of suggestions for dealing with various problems and myths related to adult volunteer programs. A nine-item bibliography is also provided. (ESR)
