A Handbook for Using Movable Action Books.
Bohning, Gerry; Radencich, Marguerite
Prepared as a guide for teachers, parents, and librarians, this handbook presents guidelines for developing a collection of movable action books (also called pop-ups, movables, surprise books, lift-the-flap books, or novelty books) appropriate for use with children in the home or school setting. Following a brief description of action books, their suggested age range, and history, the handbook provides teaching suggestions for using action books at the elementary and middle/junior high school levels. An annotated booklist is then presented, organized by levels--preschool and primary, primary and intermediate, and intermediate and middle school/junior high. Within each level the books are grouped by category and briefly described. Categories for preschool and primary levels include alphabet books, counting books, arithmetic basic facts, telling time, rhyming books, Mother Goose and nursery rhymes, general concept books, concept series, fun recreational reading books, poetry, and old favorites. Primary and intermediate level categories consist of the prehistoric world, changing environment, life cycle, and the balance of nature. Sections for intermediate and middle/junior high school level include art, biological science, natural science, physical science, technological science, social studies, and general reading. An annotated list of reissued antique action books from the 1800s is also provided, and 34 references are appended. (MM)
