Taking Care of Young Children with AIDS.
Federlein, Anne Cairns
This booklet provides an overview of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and guidelines for child care administrators and caregivers. It is argued that reason must overcome fear about the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in early childhood centers. Discussion addresses such questions as: (1) Can child caregivers get AIDS from children? (2) Can children contract AIDS from other children? (3) Can mothers infect their newborn children? Guidelines for caregivers concern risk of infection, hand washing techniques, and curriculum issues. Guidelines for administrators focus on questions such as: (1) Must I enroll a child with AIDS? (2) When should a child with AIDS not attend a child care program? (3) Should schools teach children about AIDS? (4) What should be done about other infections AIDS children get? References and numerous resources, including hotlines, organizations, resource materials, free publications, videotapes, a catalogue, and posters, are listed. (RH)
