In this article, the author describes a new cybersecurity course at the University of Abertay Dundee in Scotland. Geoffrey R. Lund, leader of the software-applications program at Abertay, says the course prepares students for a rapidly growing job market by teaching that the best defense is a good offense. Professors set up a network of 20 or so computers separated from the rest of the university system. The students then practice hacking into, perhaps even bringing down, the network. By hacking, students learn to find chinks in the security armor of an institution's systems and are better prepared to set up protections. The Abertay students are called "white hat," or ethical, hackers, alerting vulnerable organizations about weaknesses and even occasionally sending viruses back into the computers of malicious "black hat" hackers.
