Texas Tech Graduate Seminar Tackles Poverty
Alexander, Karen L.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v98 n1 p80-82 2006
Family and consumer sciences (FCS) professionals can have a positive impact on the human condition of individuals and families living in poverty. However, to fully understand the issues of poverty, professionals need exposure to the issues and concentrated time to examine poverty through research, issue analysis, and reflection. This article describes a professional development seminar within the FCS graduate program at Texas Tech University. The objectives of the seminar were to: (1) Identify, research, and report on issues of poverty; (2) Relate the issues of poverty to professional practice; (3) Reflect on the issues and share insights in small group and class discussions; and (4) Gain exposure to poverty through a service learning project.
