An Islamic Perspective on Environmental Literacy
Abu-Hola, Imfadi
Education, v130 n2 p195-211 Win 2009
Man's relationship with the environment is crucial. He can use its natural resources, but not in jest. No damaging or overuse behavior should be the dominant behavior. Religious values and rules play an important role in achieving the balance in the environment. One big goal of Islam is to make the life easy and safe. Moreover, in Islamic religion, positive attitudes toward nature and the environment are far reaching. Also, humans, from the Islamic point of view, are the most important creature according to their duty of representatives on earth, but, they are responsible for keeping balance in the environment. Deep looking on Islamic values and rules will reveal that all environmental concepts and issues were treated in a very powerful and clear way. Encouraging agriculture, forbidding negative behaviors threatening the environment, forbidding overuse of natural resources, preventing pollution, enforcing different types of cleanliness, and respects of animal, plants and water, all are among Islamic values and duties. One can conclude that the big goal of all Qur'an verses and Prophet (pbuh) sayings and traditions is to build and maintain healthy and clean environment from any source of pollution or misuse.
