Meaningful Movement for Children: Stay True to Their Natures
Baumgarten, Sam
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n4 p9-11 July 2006
This article discusses the meaningful movement for children. In this article, the author discusses "roots" in the "physical education garden" which, when thoroughly examined, reveal tried and true insights about children and their natures. By revisiting these natures or characteristics, one will have a clearer picture of what is meaningful to children and, in turn, what kinds of programming these natures suggest. The author discusses the analysis of movement formulated by Rudolf Laban, who delineated the four aspects of movement: (1) body--what the body is doing; (2) space--where the body is going; (3) effort--how the body is moving; and (4) relationship--with whom or with what is the body moving. The author also discusses the work of Ruth Morison which, focused on educational gymnastics, and children's need for adventure and energetic movement.
