Reading, Writing and Relevance.
Hoffman, Mary
This monograph presents classroom activities that were designed to encourage children to read and write in a self-reliant and responsible manner. The activities were chosen for their relevance to the children involved and because the vocabulary involved was interesting, familiar, and worth remembering and using again. The topics are arranged in sections according to grade level. For small children, activities range from collecting menus and recipes to tape-recording stories and examining guinea pigs. Junior and middle school projects cover driving safety, consumer activities, and use of the telephone directory yellow pages. On the secondary level, students compare advertising, take field trips for writing information, and compose project reports on safety and other issues of public concern. The activities described in this monograph are intended as guides to stimulate teachers to generate similar functional reading activities. (MAI)
