Nurturing Your Newborn: Young Parents' Guide to Baby's First Month. [With Teacher's Guide (Workbook Responses, Quizzes, Answer Keys) and Independent Study Guide.]
Lindsay, Jeanne Warren; Brunelli, Jean
A teen mother is likely to be out of school for several weeks following childbirth and will probably spend many hours caring for and bonding with her child. Schools may take this opportunity to allow her to earn elective school credit. This document is comprised of a textbook for use in such a course, a study guide, and a teacher's guide. The textbook chapters are: (1) "Coming Home with Your Baby," discussing initial adjustment; (2) "Feeding and Loving Your Newborn," presenting tips on breastfeeding and bottle feeding and providing information on obtaining assistance for food expenses; (3) "Observing Your Wonderful Newborn," describing typical newborn behavior and sensory capabilities; (4) "Baby's Goal--To Be Comfortable," providing suggestions for meeting infant's comfort needs and discussing "spoiling" and the importance of maternal sensitivity; (5) "Guarding Your Infant's Health and Safety," dealing with various conditions such as diaper rash and identifying common health complaints; (6) "Dad's a Parent, Too," concerning the benefits of father involvement in infant care and father's rights and responsibilities; (7) "Focus on Mom and Extended Family," discussing issues related to the role of extended family members, the importance of taking responsibility, and living arrangements; and (8) "Baby and Parents--Changing Rapidly," examining relationships with other caregivers, a partner, having another child, and lifestyle changes. Each chapter contains numerous quotations from teenage mothers. The study guide includes journal and project assignments and study questions. The teacher's guide contains a course description, suggested minimum requirements, journal assignments, projects, and evaluation materials. Contains 12 references. (KB)
