School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n6 p24 Feb 2005
Last year, a school embarked on a school-wide project that would take all of their students, kindergarten through-sixth grade, through a tangible art timeline. The result was a passageway--over seventy-five feet in length--that revealed the history of art, from cave painting to modern-day graffiti art. The "walk through time" was inspired by how artists of various time periods and cultures have decorated walls. Each grade level, about fifty students each, was assigned an area of the passageway, which was presented in chronological order. This article briefly describes the timeline. Students learned that the visual arts have both a history and specific relationships to various cultures.
