Reach for Reference: A New Early Encyclopedia
Safford, Barbara Ripp
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v22 n1 p33-34 Sep 2005
This article reviews the new Grolier Student Encyclopedia, intended for grades three through eight. Good middle-level readers might become frustrated with this source, but primary and intermediate students, middle-level students reading below grade level, and English language learners of any age will find the style of information presentation helpful. Sentence length is short, and difficult concepts are presented carefully and sequentially with accompanying illustrations to aid understanding. Each article is introduced by a title and brief summary, and a box with key points, key facts, amazing facts, questions and answers, or biographies is inserted in almost every article. Although advertised as a general encyclopedia, the content focus is the United States, especially in biography, history, geography, and sports coverage.
