It might be said that for most occupations there is now less of a need for mathematics than there was say fifty years ago. But, the author argues, geometry, probability, and statistics constitute essential knowledge for everyone. Maybe not the geometry of Euclid, but certainly geometrical ways of thinking that might enable us to describe the world around us. Notions of symmetry and art are explored, through repeating patterns, and three-dimensional geometry. For some, it seems, the ability simply to "see" is becoming a lesser honed skill as many become increasingly preoccupied with looking at two-dimensional representations of reality. There is much to "see" here, and the question "is seeing really the same as believing?" might just be appropriate. (Contains 6 figures.)
