On Using GIS to Teach in the Social Sciences

In this article, the author discusses how a professor can harness the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and use GIS to teach in the social sciences. She shows examples of how GIS can illustrate concepts during lecture or discussion, and provides two specific GIS assignments: one for undergraduate students and the other for graduate students. In addition, she provides some basic guidelines regarding pre-requisites and resource requirements for the interested reader. The technology of GIS is dramatically changing the way the world does business; in her view, those in education could dramatically change the world if they harness this technology.
