A theoretical framework and suggestions for teaching about the future at the secondary level are presented. Seven chapters comprise the document. Chapter I examines the nature of and approach to futurism and explores ideas of European and American futurists. Chapter II presents a rationale, characteristics of futures education, outlines of courses and units, and methods of integrating futures studies into the curriculum. Chapter III lists innovative methods for teaching about the future. Goals, techniques for forecasting the future, and 20 activities are included. Chapter IV is an inquiry into values and futures education. Sample questionnaires, inventories, and activities for implementation of value analysis are provided. Chapter V, "Images of the Future Through Science Fiction," presents a list of relevant resources. Chapter VI considers evaluating the outcomes of futures education. Methods for assessing cognitive and affective outcomes are suggested. Chapter VII lists relevant resources arranged by category: books suitable for student tests, basic works, advanced reading, general works, creativity, energy and environment, economics and work, education, life styles and changing sex roles, alternative realities, politics and government, technology, and simple living. Other topics are: society and culture, transformation and transcendence, international relations and world order, biomedicine and psychology, and population and food. Lists of multimedia kits, games, simulations, and periodicals are included. (KC)
