Music in a Flat World: Thomas L. Friedman's Ideas and Your Program
Beckmann-Collier, Aimee
Music Educators Journal, v96 n1 p27-30 2009
In his bestseller "The World is Flat," Pulitzer-winning author Thomas L. Friedman discusses the concept of globalization and its "flattening" effect on the world. Globalization is a hugely controversial and complex issue, and the effects of globalization and the new needs of a global society may be especially important to music educators. By contemplating questions about education that are raised by Friedman and applying them to music education, music teachers can begin to better prepare their students for a rapidly changing global economy. Friedman notes that there is an "undertow of concern" throughout the United States about education. But what is the right kind of education to prepare young people for the sorts of jobs available in this new flat world? And what implications does the "right education" have for music teachers and their students? In conversations with employers and educators, Friedman asked these individuals to describe the kind of education young people will need to prepare for the jobs of the new global economy. What they shared with him were not specific courses one should take, but rather certain skill sets and attitudes that will be important. In this article, the author discusses the four categories to which Friedman divides these skill sets: (1) Ability to learn how to learn; (2) Possession of passion and curiosity; (3) Plays well with others; and (4) Exercises the right-brain stuff. (Contains 15 notes.)
