This article talks about technological education in Ontario schools through their Broad-Based Technologies model. The philosophy that underlies the teaching of Broad-Based Technology is that students learn best by doing, with an emphasis on problem solving. The curriculum is an activity-based, project-driven approach to learning that provides students with knowledge, skills, and experiences in the subjects of their choice. One of the challenges that exists with this curriculum is that there is only one course code per broad-based area, regardless of the emphasis. Technological education in Ontario faces many challenges, which include the sheer size of the province, the unique needs of each region, the French Language component, the unique teacher qualification process that currently exists in Ontario, and the ongoing process to keep the curriculum current and relevant. This article first provides a general description of Ontario, describes the review process for courses from year 1 to year 3, outlines current Ontario College of Teachers regulations, and takes a big picture look at technological education at the middle and high school levels.
