An Institute for Inquiry
Kelly, Janet; Weis, R. Stephen
Science and Children, v42 n4 p45-47 Jan 2005
This article discusses professional development that offers practical tips for elementary teachers to implement in their classrooms right away. The programs at the Institute of Math, Science, and Technology Education at Texas Christian University at Fort Worth, Texas, offer a professional development model. In this successful collaborative, formed in 1999, faculty from the university's College of Science and Engineering and the School of Education teamed up to provide an array of programs and workshops to benefit area teachers and improve mathematics, science, and technology education at the K-12 level. Currently, the institute supports and sustains itself through university resources and external grant funding from foundations and corporate sponsors. Grant funds, awarded by the Sid Richardson Foundation (a Fort Worth?based philanthropic foundation that provides grants to nonprofit organizations in Texas to help them fulfill their missions), support workshop activities. Upon its formation, the Institute targeted three areas of need: (1) professional development for inservice teachers; (2) undergraduate and graduate preparation of prospective teachers; and (3) community outreach. This article describes the professional development component for inservice teachers, which, since its inception, has provided learning opportunities to 1,907 inservice teachers from over 250 public and private schools in the Dallas Fort Worth region.
