It Makes You Think
Harden, Helen
Education in Science, n234 p14-15 Sep 2009
This article provides an overview of the "It Makes You Think" resource. The lessons provided by this resource show how students can learn about the global dimension through science. The "It Makes You Think" resource contains ten topics: (1) Metals in jewellery worldwide; (2) Global food market; (3) The worldwide travels of paper; (4) Mobile phones in Tanzania; (5) Malaria; (6) Clinical trials across the world; (7) World fisheries; (8) Biofuels; (9) Stem cells; and (10) GM crops. The ten topics are offered as a series of stand-alone lessons so that teachers can easily slot them into their existing curriculum, or use them to help develop a new curriculum. Each of the ten topics is based around a "focus question". The question is designed as a means to support teachers and students in keeping the global issue as the main focus of the lesson. The main activity of each topic has a scientific focus and allows students to apply science knowledge already studied to a new situation. When students return to the focus question towards the end of the lesson, they can consider their views again, but from a scientifically more informed perspective. Each lesson therefore supports both science and global learning. (Contains 2 boxes.)
