A research project assessed the needs and desires of deaf adults living in northeastern Pennsylvania for adult and continuing education. Using a project-developed questionnaire and sign language, four researchers interviewed 150 deaf persons between the ages of 20 and 83 who were living in six counties in northeastern Pennsylvania. Of those interviewed, 59 percent indicated that they would be willing to pay a small amount for adult classes. When asked whether they would prefer attending classes at the Scranton State School for the Deaf (SSSD), a local vocational technical school, or a public school, 54 percent of the respondents indicated that they preferred taking classes at SSSD. The younger the deaf person interviewed, the more willing he or she was to attend vocational-technical or public school. Included among those course topics that seemed to arouse the most interest were taxes, English, insurance, first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As part of this same project, a private consultant who was himself deaf was hired to provide staff at SSSD with insight into deafness and to conduct two motivational and guidance seminars for deaf individuals in the region.
