This research review is dedicated to the memory of William Safire (1929-2009). A visionary leader, Safire brought other visionaries, researchers, educators, artists, and policymakers together to explore the confluence of arts education and neuroscience. He fostered the new field of neuroeducation in his work as chair of The Dana Foundation in their support of the Johns Hopkins Neuroeducation Initiative. A self-described pundit, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, and Medal of Freedom recipient, Safire's work with The Dana Foundation turned to the goal of bringing the arts back into children's lives. In this research review, the author provides an overview of The Dana Foundation's recent publication: "Neuroeducation: Learning, Arts, and the Brain--Findings and Challenges for Educators and Researchers From the 2009 John Hopkins University Summit." The author draws on resources beyond this summit as they connect with the findings and challenges in an effort to construct a snapshot of a rapidly changing landscape. In mirroring the attempt of the summit to foster a network of collaborators, the author highlights the sometimes divergent, sometimes convergent actors (e.g., concepts, domains, issues) impacting the growing relationship of neuroscience and arts education.
