Adjunct Faculty in Developmental Education: Best Practices, Challenges, and Recommendations
Datray, Jennifer L.; Saxon, D. Patrick; Martirosyan, Nara M.
Community College Enterprise, v20 n1 p34-47 Spr 2014
Adjunct and part-time faculty are an important resource for developmental education programs. Developmental courses and services are developed to serve underprepared, at-risk college students typically near the beginning of their college matriculation. According to Schults (2001), approximately 65% of the faculty teaching developmental education courses at community colleges are adjunct status. In other words, most developmental students are likely to be taught at some point by an adjunct faculty member. Therefore, administrators of developmental programs and services must take care to manage and utilize this resource effectively.
