Creation and Implementation of a Faculty Learning Community as a Model for Professional Development: Addressing the Needs of the General Education Faculty at a Private Junior College
Marty-Pearson, Julie
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
At San Joaquin Valley College, a culture of cultivating student learning through assessment was created in response to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges-Accrediting Commission of Community and Junior Colleges requirements for Fall 2012. In General Education, promoting and developing this culture has been more difficult with faculty teaching the curriculum across 11 campuses including: Aviation, Bakersfield, Fresno, Hanford, Hesperia, Modesto, Online, Rancho Cordova, Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula, and Visalia. A needs assessment was conducted to understand the climate of assessment based on the professional development for general education faculty at San Joaquin Valley College. Supported by the information gathered through the needs assessment and the research literature on assessment, teaching and learning, and faculty professional development, the model of a faculty learning community was found to be the best way to promote collaboration among faculty in all types of academic communities. At San Joaquin Valley College, a faculty learning community in general education was developed to focus on assessment efforts across all courses and campuses. This project, known as the general education faculty learning community, included faculty from all campuses and disciplines within general education. The general education faculty learning community members, through six months of training and collaboration, each developed trainings that they in turn conducted on their home campuses with general education faculty. This increased the overall professional development of all general education faculty on topics including assessment and student engagement. The faculty involved with the general education faculty learning community then focused on the goal of creating common and authentic assessments for general courses taught at San Joaquin Valley College by September 2012.
