Empowering Women is a traveling exhibition of folk art that focuses on ten cooperatives from four continents and ten countries. The exhibition is a window into the ways that cooperatives empower women to: (1) preserve and reinvigorate their country's traditional arts; (2) generate steady livelihoods for their families; (3) send their children to school; (4) become leaders in public life; (5) overcome domestic violence; (6) develop literacy programs for themselves and their children; (7) heal the traumas of war; (8) help build village schools, hospitals, and soup kitchens; (9) sustain their natural environment; and (10) save for the future. In Kenya, the Umoja Uaso Women's Group creates a safe haven from violence for women and girls. The beginning of the Umoja Uaso Women's Group in Kenya was not about art; it was about survival. The women of Umoja sell their tribe's elaborately beaded jewelry and crafts to provide for themselves and their children. With the profits from their arts, they have developed a system of resource sharing which includes a sickness and disability fund, a community center, and a school for local children.
