The term "Web 2.0"--a buzzword for a technological evolution that's been taking place online for some time--has many different definitions. In general, it refers to Web sites that go beyond simply presenting words and images, often allowing users to share information and collaborate in new ways. Content on the Web used to be largely static. One read the words on the screen (or looked at the pictures or videos) and then moved on; no further interaction was possible. Now, thanks to advances in technology, individual users have the power to change what they see on the Web and even create new content. For music educators, these developments present tremendous opportunities. Where once teachers had to install software programs on computers, now they can go online and instantly access applications that can aid in everything from curriculum planning to student assessment. If desired, those applications can also be made accessible to administrators, other teachers, or students--simultaneously. As the migration of teaching tools away from stand-alone PCs and onto the Internet continues, the author reminds teachers as well as technology administrators to take note of the many excellent resources that are coming online. In this article, the author presents a small sampling of what's available now for use in the classroom, with special emphasis on applications for music education.
