The purpose of this investigation was to measure the attitudes of college students across the United States concerning the possible use of genetic manipulation, especially in terms of enhancing human physical and intellectual characteristics. The instrument used was divided into three general areas of inquiry: the first, designed to measure the respondents' personal acceptance of genetic engineering; the second, designed to measure respondents' attitudes toward negative eugenics; and the third, to solicit opinions about which of these college students' social attitudes could influence or provide a rationale for their participation in a genetic engineering program. Also included in the questionnaire was a set of demographic questions to ascertain what, if any, personal background factors influenced the answers of respondents. The results from education, science/technology, and business/law majors are compared.
