Envisioning Information.
Tufte, Edward R.
This book presents over 400 illustrations of complex data that show how the dimensionality and density of portrayals can be enhanced. Practical advice on how to explain complex materials by visual means is given, and examples illustrate the fundamental principles of information display. Design strategies presented are exemplified in maps, the manuscripts of Galileo, timetables, notation describing dance movements, aerial photographs, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, electrocardiograms, drawings of Calder and Klee, computer visualizations, and a textbook of Euclid's geometry. The material is presented in six chapters: (1) "Escaping Flatland;" (2) Micro/Macro Readings;" (3) "Layering and Separation;" (4) "Small Multiples;" (5) "Color and Information;" and (6) "Narratives of Space and Time."
