Undergraduates as Environmental Educators: The Pedal and Paddle Pollution Tour Experience
Cronje, Ruth Johnson; Neff, Paula Kleintjes; Mowry, Donald; Running, Garry L.
Applied Environmental Education and Communication, v15 n3 p225-233 2016
Undergraduates can become effective agents of environmental outreach when challenged to produce evidence-based messages to inform the public about local environmental issues. We recount our experience partnering our undergraduate students with community organizations dedicated to water stewardship to create a "Pedal and Paddle Pollution Tour" of our local watershed, the Lower Chippewa River. Students produced summaries of significant pollution issues affecting the Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area both as short films and on a paper map. The tour provides a hands-on resource to encourage local residents to enjoy and steward our watershed while integrating scientific literacy and civic engagement into the undergraduate classroom.
