Publishers Hire PR Firm to Counter Open-Access Publishing Movement: Former Board of "Topology" Starts a Rival Journal
Brown, Susan; Monastersky, Richard
Chronicle of Higher Education, v53 n23 pA18 Feb 2007
The Association of American Publishers has hired a public-relations firm with a hard-hitting reputation to respond to the open-access-publishing movement, which campaigns for scientific results to be made freely available to the public. The firm, Dezenhall Resources, designs aggressive public-relations campaigns to counter activist groups. The firm's founder and head, Eric Dezenhall, has suggested that the association should link the traditional business model of scientific publishing with peer review and "paint a picture of what the world would look like without peer-reviewed articles." In other news, the renegade editorial board of the journal Topology, which resigned en masse last summer, has started up a rival--and cheaper--journal to challenge the venerable title, which is put out by the publishing giant Elsevier. The board revolted largely over Elsevier's pricing policies, which have drawn complaints from mathematicians and led some researchers to boycott Topology.
