Safety for Older Consumers. Home Safety Checklist.
Consumer Product Safety Commission, Washington, DC.
A home safety checklist geared to the needs of older adults is presented in this document. The beginning of the checklist highlights potential hazards which may need to be checked in more than one area of the home, such as electric cords, smoke detectors, rugs, telephone areas, and emergency exit plans. The rest of the checklist is organized according to areas of the house. The section on potential kitchen hazards advises checking the range area and step stools. Living/family room hazards discussed focus on the fireplace and chimney and passageways. The bathroom checklist describes potential dangers in the bathtub and shower areas, water temperature, lighting, medications, and small electric appliances. Potential bedroom hazards listed include smoking in bed and electric blankets. The checklist for basement/garage/workshop/storage areas includes the fuse box, appliances and power tools, and flammable liquids. The final areas highlighted are stairway areas for lighting, handrails, and conditions of the steps. The document is illustrated with line drawings. (ABL)
