Health and Beauty Magazine Reading and Body Shape Concerns among a Group of College Women.
Thomsen, Steven R.
Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, v79 n4 p988-1007 Win 2002
Examines three potential factors that might mediate the relationship between reading women's magazines and body shape and size concern. Finds that health and fitness magazine reading by college-aged women was linked directly to body shape concerns, indirectly through beliefs about men's thinness expectations. Explains that beauty and fashion magazine reading was linked to body shape concerns only indirectly via belief about men's expectations. (PM)
